The boys in the Elementary Chorus of MCS had a special workshop called "Dude's Day" with visiting vocal artist, Garth Kravits. Garth is a 30 year veteran of the Broadway, Television, and Film world and world-touring rock singer as well as an esteemed educator.
During the class, students had the opportunity to ask questions, watch demonstrations, and have feedback from Garth about singing, vocal development over the upcoming years, and opportunities that being a vocalist and chorus member provides.
As our vocal music program continues to grow, one of our goals is to make all students feel like they have a respected place in our program; the male students of our chorus have described how it was previously a perception among their peers that chorus was a "girl thing," and that they felt apprehensive about participating due to this stereotype.
To support them, we make a concerted effort to ensure we create a school culture that is supportive of all students' involvement in the fine-arts through a variety of efforts, like allowing for opportunities for students to weigh in on the selected music, movement, and learning activities. These efforts are also made easier with a visit from a performing artist like Garth, who can share with them first hand about his experiences as a male vocalist in a variety of performing arts avenues.
The girls also had a special day where they had the opportunity to chat about their preferences, goals, and development within the Vocal Music program at MCS. I'm very grateful for the active participation and talent of our youngest Chorus members, and I'm thrilled with the choices they are making on behalf of their goals for the music program.
Garth also has an exciting vision for the artistic community of Margaretville after moving to the area with his family this past October. He is currently in the early phases of opening up a performing arts school in town and will be offering classes this summer. The school will provide artistic opportunities for kids of all ages and levels from Margaretville and the surrounding towns with an emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility. Classes will also be offered for adults who are looking to discover or perhaps rediscover their love for all things voice, dance, improv, stage combat, and much more! For more information contact:
