Dear families,
Over the next three weeks, our students in grades 3-8 will be taking the New York State Assessments – or, as our students like to call them, the “state tests.” The assessment schedule is as follows:
NYS 3-8 testing | 3-4, 6-8 | April 19-21 | Period 1-3 |
NYS 3-8 testing | 5 | April 24-25 | Period 1-3 |
NYS 3-8 testing | 3-4, 6-8 | May 2-4 | Period 1-3 |
NYS 3-8 testing | 5 | May 4 & 8 | Period 1-3 |
NYS 3-8 testing | 8 | May 23 | TBD |
Regents exams | 8 | June 1 | TBD |
NYS 3-8 testing | 8 | June 5 | TBD |
It is important to know that passing or failing these assessments does not affect matriculation. Performance on these tests has no impact on whether students will advance to the next grade. Please reinforce this understanding with your students to offset any anxiety they may have about taking the “state tests.”
Third and fourth grade students will be taking paper-based tests, while our fifth grade students will be piloting computer-based assessments for the first time. I am attaching an information sheet from the New York State Department of Education about what families should know about the assessments.
Please encourage students to get extra rest and eat good, healthy breakfasts during testing weeks. If you have any questions about these assessments, please feel free to reach out to your student’s classroom teacher or to their guidance counselor for more information.
